Granite countertops maintenance is accomplished by applying a sealer to the countertop.
Think of your countertop like a car. You apply a wax to your car just about every six months to add a layer of protection to the finished paint. You'll be doing the exact same thing to your countertop.
Granite is a naturally porous stone. There are small holes all over the surface that you can't see with your naked eye.
In order to keep stains and bacteria out of the holes you fill them up with a sealer. This way you can just wipe them up with soap and water.
Granite countertops maintenance should be performed every 12 to 18 months. Exactly how often depends on the stone.
Since granite is a natural stone the number and size of the pores varies and so does the required maintenance.
As a rule I would steer clear of the sealers sold at the major home improvement stores. Find a local granite dealer and buy a sealer from them.
Their products will be superior to anything that you can get to maintain your countertop from a big box store. Your $5,000 countertop is worth the extra $10 a bottle that you will pay for a better sealer.
